Minutes from our virtual (ZOOM) meeting 12-14-2020

As the Pandemic has continued month after month, more groups are offering online, virtual meetings, conferences and discussions.  Please check our Classes and Events page for a listing of upcoming virtual events, featuring such notable bee experts as Randy Oliver, Mike Palmer and others.

Minutes from 12-14-2020

Our first virtual meeting was held Monday evening in a ZOOM session.  Thanks to all who were able to attend.  Although it is not a substitute for getting together face-to-face, it was still enjoyable to spend a cold December evening talking about bees.

Rachel Vakulich introduced herself as the Honey Queen for ECIBA for 2021.  She is looking forward to meeting with groups next year to talk about bees.  At this time, she is still looking for an adviser volunteer to help her with organizing events to attend.  If you are interested, please contact Rachel at rachel-vakulich@student.kirkwood.edu.

Joseph introduced our speaker, Julia McGuire.  Julia is a Des Moines area beekeeper, who serves as an instructor for the Great Plains Master Beekeeping program through her Beekeeping 101 course.  She is the creator of BeeLaws.org and also manages her local club, the Des Moines Backyard Beekeepers.   Julia led a talk about swarms and her experiences, sometimes daring and adventurous, in bee removal.  She also led a discussion about the various ways to control varroa, through biological, mechanical, cultural and chemical means.  The importance of varying methods of control, particularly in the chemical area, was talked about so natural resistance doesn't reduce the effectiveness of the control method.

It was good to see and hear everyone.  Members felt it would be good to meet again in March virtually if in-person meeting is not an option at that time, which seems unlikely.

I'm adding a request from the Cook family, who has several items they would like to sell as they get out of beekeeping.

Stay safe and healthy and have a happy holiday.

Jim Davis

Secretary, ECIBA
