Is Give Bees A Chance
That is what the Johnson County Supervisors are doing today by declaring August 19th, 2023 to be Honey Bee Day.
(Click here to read the proclamation on page 4 of the agenda.)
ECIBA wishes to thank the supervisors for recognizing and supporting our local bee population. Not only are they doing so by this recognition, but they also support honey bees as well as the all-important native bees and other pollinators in our state through their Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management program. This program reduces pesticide use along our county roadways and encourages establishment of native plant species. These linear strips are very important for all pollinators and helps the environment in many ways.
While honey bees are important to us, and much attention has been given to the plights of the honey bee, Iowa is home to many other important species of pollinators. Efforts to improve habitat and conditions for honey bees can benefit many other species as well, some of which are in decline. Helping one helps others.
